Our first stop is Gombori Mountain Range, a section of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. It is located in Kakheti, eastern Georgia, and stretches to 107 km, with the highest mountain – 1,991 m above sea level.
The Gombori range serves as a watershed, separating the Alazani and Iori river valleys, dividing Kakheti into two traditional regions: inner (Shida) and outer (Gare). Afterward, we tend to taste wine at Shumi, one of the leaders among high-quality Georgian wines. In ancient Georgia, The word “Shumi” meant genuine, undiluted wine. The company’s logo is a griffin (“Phaskunji” in Georgian mythology), which according to an ancient legend, brought the very first brunch of grapes to the people. After that, people started growing wines on Earth from these grapes.

“SHUMI” produces almost all types of Georgian wine from the high-quality category list (analogous to Bordeaux wine AOC). Besides, the company uses its unique technology to create “lori” brandy, “Kahetian Chacha,” and “Kahetian Chacha special” grape grappas aged in oak barrels, an organic (bio) wine and an original, natural beverage made by exclusive technology, named “Zigu.” After the tour and wine degustation in Shumi Winery, we have lunch at their restaurant.

The history of Corporation Kindzmarauli dates back to 1533 and is connected with the construction of the Kvareli fortress. According to King Levan Didi of Kakheti, the wine Marani (cellar) was erected with other royal buildings. This wine cellar produced wine and molasses (badagi) exclusively for the royal families for much of its history and now has opened to the broader local and international market.

When tasting their wine, the consumer should feel, taste, and smell the unique features of the place where the vines were cultivated to get informed about traditions and history connected with the vineyards.
